HOW CAN WE FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE IN A CREATIVE WAY?

HOW CAN WE FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE IN A CREATIVE WAY?

CASE STUDY: 17 ARTISTS COME TOGETHER TO SHOW US HOW IT’S DONE

Climate change is a problem that affects our lives more and more. Hotter temperatures, rising sea levels and loss of species are among the impacts of this global crisis.

Living in cities, away from the immediate impact, we might not see and feel the changes every day, but the climate is changing, nonetheless. And not to be negative, but if we do nothing about it, it’s only going to get worse.

Skin Sapiens exists to help people make conscious choices for the good of our skin and the planet. It’s why we exist. And so we believe part of our job is drawing attention to the need to look after the Earth we live on.

When we set up our indie skincare business, we knew that we didn't want to do things the way the industry had always done them. Instead, we wanted to put doing good at the heart of every action. True to our purpose, we put our money, time and effort where our values are, and signed up to 1% For The Planet before we sold anything at all.

Big in the USA, a growing movement in Europe and elsewhere, 1% For The Planet is a network of businesses, individuals and charities who club together to tackle Earth’s most pressing environmental issues.

Like every other organisation in the network, whether they happen to make skincare, shoes or houses, we donate 1% of everything we sell no matter whether we make a profit, or turn a loss, to charities fighting climate change.

It’s a simple pledge, but it means that as we grow, so does our positive impact on the Earth. One purchase at a time. And if that doesn't get us out of bed in the morning, what will?!

In 2022, we were delighted to be able to donate to a grass routes project. it was time to rise up and take local action for a global impact. Because now is the time!

INTRODUCING THE "RISE UP RESIDENCY"

The Rise Up Residency is a week-long mural festival and educational programme organised by RISE UP CLEAN UP. Organised in Margate, Kent, by internationally acclaimed artist, Louis Masai; the residency is a community-driven social initiative with a mission to clean up local beaches and protect the British coastline, ocean and native wildlife.

For one week, the Rise Up Residency welcomed 17 artists to create public art on the walls of different buildings around the city. The goal? To raise awareness of the issues caused by plastic in and near our oceans and encourage dialogue about the issues facing our coastlines among the local community.

Beyond the murals, a Rise Up Margate-sponsored beach clean recovered plastic from the local coastline. The plastic was used in workshops, where families could come together to create art for the community items they recovered from the sea.

The festival had a plastic-free production and post-production carbon evaluation to offset its carbon footprint. All walls for the murals were washed with carbon-absorbing paint, to draw carbon from the air and into the artworks themselves. Above all, the murals were bright, bold & inspiring.

WHEN PAINTING BECOMES ACTIVISM

Skin Sapiens proudly partnered with international artist Martin Whatson, a Norwegian street artist, to sponsor his work for the event.

Martin transformed this corner of the world into a stellar piece of artwork that shouts about the relationship between humans, the ocean and the nature that lives in it.

We as street artists, have a platform which we can use to inform people. For this wall I'm painting a whale doing a deep dive into the ocean. To represent how we, as humans, are putting our mark on nature,” says Martin.

WALK THE WALK
